Laminate Flooring Construction

High Pressure Laminate(HPL)

HPL consists of a minimum of 5 layers and is generally considered a more superior product due to the addition of Phenolic Treated Kraft sheets, which add additional strength in terms of denting and overall durability. HPL is more expensive, however their added durability means that the floor will last longer, look better and generally outperform DPL showing little wear and tear over time. Generally speaking, the core board utilized in the construction of a HPL is thinner than those of a DPL, however this is counteracted by the Phenolic Kraft sheets which not only strengthen the overall structure but also increase the sound deadening properties of the laminate floor thus reducing the hollow sound associated with floating floors. HPL is well suited commercial environments and households that experience a high degree of foot traffic.

High Performance Wear Layer
Durable protective surface resists scuffs, stains and fading.

Decorative Sheet
Provides a broad range of stunning visuals in both wood grain and natural tile looks.

Phenolic Treated Kraft Sheets
Helps provide additional impact resistance and sound deadening properties.

Penetrating Seam Sealant
Hot wax-oil emulsion treatment penetrates HDF fibers for long-term moisture protection.

Water-Resistant High Density Fiberboard
Provides improved structural integrity and additional moisture protection

Balancing Layer
Made from the same HPL material as the flooring's surface, the balancing layer helps keep flooring panel’s level and ensures a better installation.

Direct Pressure Laminate (DPL)

More than ninety percent of all laminates sold are DPL. A Direct Pressure Laminate consists of four layers, the quality of which will determine the overall durability of the floor. A good quality laminate core is made from high density fiber board (HDF) and measures between 6mm and 12mm thick, with a thicker core denoting product that is more stable and quieter to walk upon. A balancing layer constructed of a rigid material is affixed to the bottom of the floor, increasing the rigidity and resistance to buckling and warping. The photographic laminated surface should be treated with a protective layer which will protect the floor from scratching and denting. The most common and most effective of these treatments will contain varying amounts of Aluminum Oxide.

1. An impact resistant top layer provides a protective finish.

2. The high quality printed design layer in various colors and patterns.

3. A high density fiber board (HDF) comprises the core.

4. The bottom balancing layer to equalize pressure and keep the board nice and straight.
