Storage and Acclimation

Storage
Flooring should not be delivered until the building has been closed in with windows and doors and until all cement work, plastering and any other wet work has been completed and dried. Upon delivery, inspect all boxes and packages for damages.

Look for characteristics like dents, gouges, rounded corners, opened boxes, broken containers, as this would indicate that the merchandise might be damaged. Store the unopened boxes in the area in which the floor is to be installed and ensure that there is a minimum of a 4 inch air space under cartons that are stored on concrete floors. Check adhesive label for storage instructions and limitations.

Acclimation

Acclimation is the process whereby the hardwood flooring adjusts to the temperature of the environment in which it is to be installed. Hardwood floors expand and contract naturally based upon temperature and relative air humidity. A floor that has not undergone the process of acclimation prior to installation can result in gapping or buckling. Do not remove the hardwood floor from the cartons during the acclimation process. Permanent heating or air conditioning systems should be installed and operational to ensure that air temperature is consistent with normal levels.

Solid hardwood floors should be allowed to acclimate for a minimum of 72 hours or as long as specified by the manufacturer. Although it is not necessary to acclimate engineered floors, it is however prudent to allow the floor to acclimate for at least 24 hours or as long as recommended by the manufacturer.
