Repairing Carpet

Essentially carpet cannot be repaired, it can only be replaced. This would be very simple if it were not for the fact that carpet is manufactured in dye lots, resulting in shade variation and making it almost impossible to match new carpet to existing carpet. It is possible to match an existing piece of carpet if you know the dye lot number, and if the manufacturer still has carpet from that particular dye lot.

Dye lots can vary dramatically, resulting in changes in color and shading. It is always best to order additional carpet and keep it in storage in case this situation arises.

Burns and stains are the most common carpet issues. You can cut away superficial burned fibers with a scissors. Deeper burns or stains require patching by cutting away the damaged carpet and then replacing with new carpet.

Follow these drections to repair spot damage.

1. Remove damaged carpet using a cookie cutter tool, available from specialist carpet stores. Press cookie cutter down over affected area and twist and apply pressure to cut.
2. Utilizing the cookie cutter, cut a piece of new carpet the exact same size and dimensions. Insert double-sided tape in the cut-out space, making sure that the tape is correctly positioned and that the tape overlaps the patch seams on all sides.
3. Press the patch into place and use a carpet seam adhesive around the edges of the patch inorder to prevent unravelling.
